The Cay

How many days have Philip and Timothy been on the cay? He has been on the cay for about 2 months.

What does Phillip do to help timothy when he is sick? Phillip helps Timothy out by ripping a piece of clothing, dipping it in water, and then putting it over timothy forehead

Explain why Phillip is ready to climb the coconut tree? he is ready to climb the coconut tree because he knows that they are stuck on the cay and that he could get a coconut so they can drink it because he was thirsty

Why do you think that Timothy is teaching Phillip these survival skills? he is teaching Phillip survival skills because he knows that he would survive by himself because he is blind.

What do you think Phillip means about this comment. " are you still black"? because Phillip thinks that he could have changed his skin colour.

Health discovery topic Vaping

In health, we have been asked to do discovery tasks. I have chosen the topic of Vaping. for this I need to research my topic to answer some questions. We were asked to pic six questions about our topic and answer them. We had to come up with Strategies to help someone and then I made a picture collage relating to the topic.

Why do people vape? Vaping is cheaper than smoking and is easier to buy. It is only available for people over 18 to buy legally. This doesn’t stop young people from buying it. Some people think that vaping is cool or do it because their friends do it. Some people think that vaping is healthier than smoking cigarettes.

What are the dangers of vaping? Vaping is unhealthy for your lungs. It can cause lung disease and damage to them. It can cause breathing difficulties, coughing, heart attacks, seizures, cancer, and addiction. It can cause the same dangers as smoking.

Who do I know that vapes? I have family members and friends that vape. Some use to smoke now they vape.

How does vaping affect people? It can make them have shortness of breath, cough, headaches, bad breath, dry mouth. Vaping is less harmful than smoking, but still has risks. A second-hand vaper can have dangerous effects on others just like smoking. It is not good for young children or people with asthma.

When did vaping start? The first idea was made in 1927 by a man called Joesph Robinson, but it was first made by a Chinese pharmacist his name was Hon Lik he made it after his father died of lung cancer, and being a smoker himself wanted to try and quit.

Is vaping better than smoking? Vaping is not harmless as it still has the same risks but research shows it’s the healthier option as it reduces the risks. Personally, i think that both are as bad as each other.

The Cay

At the moment we are studying the book the Cay. for this task we were asked to write about 3 characters points of view in the first five chapters

Mum's point of view -  Her point of view is mainly based on her fear for her family and their future. She is scared and nervous about staying at Curacao. She looks for an excuse to leave. It doesn't help that she doesn't like living there, she cant stand the smell of the oil. She just wants her family to be safe and far away from Curacao. She just wants to protect Philip and take him somewhere else safe.

Philip's point of view - Philip is only 11 years old he has no idea of the dangers of what's really going on. He gets excited and is curious and asking his dad questions about what's going on. He feels like it's a bad dream but soon realizes it's not. He gets angry with his mum for wanting to leave and wants to stay with his dad, he doesn't want to leave his dad and friends behind. On the raft, he starts getting scared about everything and doesn't know where his parents are.

Timothy's point of view - Timothy is an old black man maybe in his sixties, He rescued Philip after the explosion. timothy has a lot of knowledge about all the islands as he traveled a lot. he tries his best to protect Philip from danger including the sun and water. Timothy hides his fear and stays very calm and gives Philip hope by keeping him safe. he does this by fishing for food, giving him water, and keeping him warm.

u-boat

U-boats are a type of submarine that the germans use in World War 2. The submarine could carry up to 35 men and 12 torpedos. The boat could travel underwater for two hours at a time.

This video shares good information about the Uboat without even going inside. It describes the measurements and areas and the history of it. It also shows close-ups of what the Uboat looks like.

Calypso

This music makes me feel like me sitting on the beach, listening to music with family and friends eating fish and chips. Seagulls hanging around trying to steal our food. It's a nice summer's day with the sun shining and the water so blue. my family and I are playing touch rugby along the waterfront. my dad and I are seeing who is the strongest by dunking each other into the waves. I love days like this bring on summer.

Pontoon bridge

Why were these bridges created? A pontoon bridge is a bridge that floats on water. It is a floating bridge with barges or boats to support the bridge deck. These are used for sheltered water crossing in the war.

How are they built? They are made from large watertight concrete floats, boats, barges or other buoyant structures connected end to end.

How are they reusable? They are moveable, you could use them for a pedestrian or vehicle bridge to cross the water.

Social Justice

 Kia Ora Year 9,

Your task this week (Term 3 Week 5) is to create a piece of writing that helps your reader understand prejudice faced by different groups of people in Aotearoa (using the work we did in class).
(This is a continuation of the blog post some of you did in class already)

We are doing this to improve our writing skills and to help people understand different points of view - so that humans receive SOCIAL JUSTICE!

Groups of people we have learned about include: The muslim community, the LGBT+ community, the pasifika community, the asian community, and the disabled community. (Link to the work we did)

It should be structured like this:

INTRODUCTION What is your writing about?
“In our social justice hurumanu, we have learned about…
I think…

PARAGRAPHS

Write about what this community has experienced. What kind of prejudice do they face? (Pre-judice means to PRE-JUDGE. To judge someone before getting to know them)
What do they want us to know?
What do you think?

CONCLUSION
Wrap up your writing with what you want your readers to take away after they have read it. What thought should they have in their head when they walk away?

---

INTRODUCTION: In our social justice hurumanu, we have learned about a lot of prejudiced communities. Such as the Muslim community, the gay community, and the Asian community. I think that everyone should be treated the same no matter their religion, sexuality, or race.

PARAGRAPH 1 - The Muslim community has experienced a lot of bad things like the mosque shooting that happened two years ago. This was a terrorist attack that happened to the Muslims in Christchurch. The Muslims are judged for what they look like, what they wear, how they talk, and their religion. They want us to know that they are no different than everyone else. I think that Muslims should be treated the same as us.

PARAGRAPH 2 - The gay community has been through a lot of bad things too like being beaten up, assaulted, and bullied. They get judged for how they dress, how they talk, what they look like, and who they hang out with. They want us to know that they are still human and still have feelings even though they are gay. I think that they should be treated the same no matter who they like.

PARAGRAPH 3 - The Asian community has also been through a lot of bad stuff like being bullied. People are racist to them all the time. Just because they’re different, people judge them. For the food they eat, what they look like, and how they speak. Asian hate has gone on for many years but has increased fast over the last 12 months. In 2020/21 it has increased 1900% due to the Covid pandemic. Alot of people blame them for it. They want us to know that they are still people and that they are normal. They are not weird just because they are different. I think that the Asian community should be treated the same as us no matter what.

CONCLUSION - In the end, bullying is not okay and everybody should be treated the same. Just because they look, sound, or act differently than you, you should still be respectful. Always treat people the way you want to be treated.

schooner do now-week 2

The schooner is a boat, the schooner has different sizes and different shapes, on the sails the color is white, and the rest of the boat is like a brownish color. On the schooner there is more than one sail it is not like a regular boat cause a regular boat has normally one or two sails but the schooner has 4 or more, and it is really close to the water. If I was on the boat I would only see water depending on where I am.

Design process home economics

Hello, welcome to my blog. In my Home Economics, on Thursday we had an assessment and when came up with a recipe and we had to make it, we worked in a group of two and my partner was Roberto, The recipe that Roberto and I made was chocolate cookies/biscuits. we found the pricing for the ingredients on the countdown website.

 these are the ingredients:

chocolate cookies

Butter softened and cubed 125g                                                                                                                  vanilla essence  extract  ½ teaspoon                                                                                                           sugar 2/1 cup                                                                                                                                                   egg 1

flour 1 cup                                                                                                                                                         baking powder 1 teaspoon                                                                                                                            milk  1 cup                                                                                                                                                         1/2cup chocolate drops

this is able to make: 16

Preheat your oven to 180C and line a baking tray with baking paper.

Beat the butter, vanilla, and sugar until very pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg then sieve the flour, baking powder, and salt together and fold into the butter.

Gently mix through the chocolate. Roll into balls, place on the tray and gently press them down.

Bake until golden, approximately 13 to 15 minutes.

this is the stakeholder's feedback:

Colour - it looks like a chocolate biscuit/cookie but it could be darker, more cocoa perhaps.

Texture- Firm but slightly dry
White chocolate- three large chips is a decent amount but all on one side of the biscuit.
Taste- mild chocolate taste, with a buttery aftertaste.

Thanks,
teacher

Reflection

Today we have been learning the school values and we had to highlight the ones that we did and then we had to pick 4 values that we highlighted and the ones that I pick were, I line up respectfully, I move on the first bell and arrive before the second bell, I ask for help and ask questions and I keep learning spaces nice and clean for the other classes and the ones that didn't pick that I'm going to work on are using the right sites, and complete online work safely. I play games in class because I get bored. To fix that I will... not go on the games.

Hello, readers today we are learning about filtering so here is what I learnt.

filtering is separating different sized particles out of a making. you can not filter soluble particles.

hypothesis: I think the color will turn

method:

1. Pour approximately 50mL of copper sulfate solution into a beaker.

2. Add the same volume of sodium carbonate solution. A reaction will happen, you should see a cloudy blue precipitate form. Called copper carbonate.

3. Watch demo then fold filter paper to fit inside the funnel

4. Place the funnel with the filter paper inside of it, into the mouth of a conical flask.

5. Stir the mixture in the beaker, then carefully pour it into the funnel.

6. Observe what happened.

we did the experiment and jack accidentally overpoured into the filter and it has a little bit of blue but what should of happen it should have been clear...
